Last year was a great year for movies, and if it weren’t for the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it would’ve been even better. Unfortunately, many of the movies that were originally supposed to hit the big screen in 2023 have been pushed to 2024. So here’s our list of the ten most anticipated movies that will hopefully make their 2024 release date.
Megalopolis
Francis Ford Coppola’s latest directorial venture “Megalopolis” looks to be releasing sometime this year, and could actually release within the next few months, according to Coppola himself.
“It’s only going to be a few months and it’ll be out,” said Coppola in a recent episode of The Accutron Show podcast.
Little is known about the film, aside from a vague plot line about an architect wanting to rebuild New York City as a utopia after a disaster, and the incredibly stacked cast including Adam Driver, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, and so many more talented actors.
The movie marks Coppola’s most recent director credit since Distant Vision in 2016, and before that was 2011’s Twixt.
Megalopolis is set to release sometime this year, but no official release date has been confirmed yet.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
If a Ghostbusters movie is releasing, you can bet it’ll be one of our most anticipated movies of the year. This year’s no different.
I love Ghostbusters, and based on the one trailer we’ve gotten so far, it looks like Frozen Empire has the potential to rival the original.
After the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a proper revival of the franchise, Jason Reitman is back with the sequel to the 2021 hit. Reitman wrote and directed Afterlife, and while he’s a writer on Frozen Empire, he’s handed over the directing to Gil Kenan — a writer on both Afterlife and Frozen Empire.
The film sees the return of many actors from previous Ghostbusters films including Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and of course Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire pits these characters and more against a new villain in a brand new story.
“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.”
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is expected to hit theaters on March 29.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Speaking of empires…until seeing Godzilla: Minus One in IMAX last year, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn’t really on my radar. After Godzilla: Minus One, that has changed entirely.
As I wrote in my review, Godzilla: Minus One was one of the few Godzilla movies I’d ever seen and after walking out of the theater I was reborn a Godzilla fan if there ever was one.
Naturally, I immediately added Godzilla x Kong to my watchlist and went back to watch the original Godzilla from 1954 — which, if I might add, was also surprisingly good.
So far, the plot has been kept under wraps, but we do know that Godzilla and Kong will be teaming up again to face the dreaded Skar King. Aside from that, it looks like we’ll just have to wait until the movie comes out on March 29 to see what it’s all about.
The Fall Guy
Hot off the high heels of Barbie, Ryan Gosling stars in the upcoming cool-guy action flick The Fall Guy, a film based on the 1981 TV series of the same name (which, until recently, I had no clue even existed).
Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a since-retired stuntman who gets pulled back into the game when the star of a big-budget studio movie, directed by his ex played by Emily Blunt, goes missing.
This movie has so much potential, especially being directed by David Leitch, who also directed Bullet Train in 2022, so I have incredibly high hopes for this movie.
Do I think it’ll end up winning best picture? Who’s to say? Doesn’t really matter, because I think it’s going to be a ton of fun and I can’t wait to enjoy every minute of it.
Beetlejuice 2
I’m pretty hyped for Beetlejuice 2 on a personal level more than I think it’s actually going to be one of the best movies of the year. I grew up watching Beetlejuice with my brother, and singing along to Harry Belafonte’s “Banana Boat,” so it was a pretty big part of my childhood and it’s a movie that — while it’s not as good as I remember it being — I still hold a special place for it in my heart.
I never really thought Beetlejuice needed a sequel, so I was initially pretty hesitant about the news. But after seeing the initial cast list, I have to say I’ve got my hopes up pretty high for this one.
With Michael Keaton returning as Beetlejuice, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara returning as Lydia and Delia Deetz, Jenna Ortega playing Lydia’s daughter, and Willem Dafoe in a currently unknown role — how can you go wrong?
I fully expect Beetlejuice 2 to be as wacky and wild as the first one, if not even more so with Willem Dafoe attached to the project. While I’m not exactly expecting it to be my favorite movie of the year, I am certainly looking forward to seeing this in theaters when it comes out on September 6.
Mickey17
Announced in January 2022, Mickey17 is writer and director Bong Joon Ho’s latest film after writing and directing Parasite in 2019. So far, all we know about the movie is that it’s an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel “Mickey7.”
We also only have a single 30-second spot of the movie to give us any sort of look at it, and it’s supposed to release on March 29 (same as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, actually!)
Personally, I am a huge fan of things like this being kept incredibly under wraps as it makes the actual movie experience that much better when you don’t know what to expect. And it makes it all the better that it’s coming from the man whose movies, like Parasite and Snowpiercer, I couldn’t have expected to begin with.
I haven’t seen a ton of Bong Joon-Ho’s filmography, but I will definitely be watching them all in preparation for Mickey17 in March.
(Edit: After writing, Mickey17 was delayed indefinitely)
Argylle
Let me just start by saying Matthew Vaughn is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers. I’ve seen Kingsman: The Secret Service more times than I can count, and it just gets better every time. I love the completely over the top and outrageous comedy that Vaughn uses in his films, and he has a very particular way of giving his movies a unique and familiar style — like Wes Anderson, but in the complete opposite direction.
Argylle’s got just about everything I want from a Matthew Vaughn movie — at least based on the trailer. Stacked cast list with Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, and Sofia Boutella? Check. Insane action with incredibly bright and vibrant colors? Check. What more could you ask for?
While I am quite sick of seeing the trailer for Argylle every time I go to my local AMC, it doesn’t diminish my desire to see the movie when it hits theaters on February 2 this year.
Deadpool 3
Deadpool 3 is probably going to be on a great many “most anticipated movies” lists this year, and mine is no exception. I don’t care how much hate Marvel gets nowadays, Deadpool is always a hit.
As much of a letdown as Phase 5 has been aside from a few outliers like Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Loki, and dare I say — The Marvels (I enjoyed it!) the recent Marvel releases have been a bit disappointing. However, Deadpool 3 can easily be the comeback that Marvel needs right now.
With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman returning as Deadpool and Wolverine, among the other cast rumors including James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier — Deadpool 3 will be the first MCU movie to feature the Fox X-Men characters in more than a small post-credit scene. Naturally, it’s going to lift Marvel up a bit.
So far, it looks like Deadpool 3 will release on July 26, but I’m actually not-so-secretly hoping it gets delayed since the film was shot heavily in the middle of the WGA strike, meaning improvising was pretty limited.
Nosferatu
Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is far and away one of the movies I am most looking forward to this year. Eggers’ most recently wrote and directed The Lighthouse, The Northman, and The Witch, and while I have yet to see The Northman — I quite enjoyed the other two films.
Nosferatu sees Eggers yet again partner up with Willem Dafoe for undoubtedly another bizarre role for the veteran actor. The movie also features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, and the terrifying Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok himself.
While I haven’t seen the Max Schreck Nosferatu from 1922, it will definitely be on my list as we get closer to the release of the upcoming remake.
Nosferatu is currently set for a December 25 release date — a perfect Christmas present for any movie lover!
Dune: Part Two
And so we come to the movie I just can’t wait any longer to see…Dune: Part Two.
If you know me at all, you’ll know how obsessed I am with Dune. So much so that I read the entire series in the span of a few weeks and finishing God Emperor of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune in just four days each.
I. Love. Dune.
So it stands to reason that, of course, my most anticipated movie release of the year is the second installment in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise. I will absolutely be rewatching the first movie — hopefully in IMAX — and rereading the book ahead of the film’s March 1 release date.
Did I mention I like Dune?
