I’ve been playing The Finals a lot lately, and it’s been an absolute blast! Embark really has a hit on their hands here. However, there’s one major thing that really bugs me about the game that I feel really needs to get changed as soon as possible.

Spawns

That’s right — spawns. Just about everything else in this game feels perfectly fine to me (with a few exceptions here and there), but good lord the spawning system needs some work.

And I’m not really talking about the respawn timer — although I wouldn’t mind shaving a couple seconds off of that — I’m mostly talking about where the game decides to spawn you on the map after you die.

Once you die, you’re stuck on a death screen for 30 seconds unless someone comes in and pulls off a clutch revive (of which I am always appreciative). I would imagine Embark set the respawn timer that high to encourage players to take a more methodical approach and actually think through their decisions when playing the game, and I get that completely, but it doesn’t feel great when you’re forced to wait 30 seconds to come back into the action and when you do…you’re all the way on the other side of the map and you have to make your way back to the fun.

If we could spawn in just the slightest bit closer to an active vault, that would be a much appreciated change that would still promote the gameplay that Embark is looking for, while making those gung-ho, not-exactly-the-smartest plays just a little more forgiving.

Because sometimes you just want to run into a crashing building guns blazing, and sometimes you end up dying every time you do so.

Outside of that, I’m having a ton of fun with The Finals! It’s one of the best shooters I’ve played in a long time. It feels great, the destruction is such a refreshing mechanic that makes every match feel different, and you can pretty much play as casual or competitive as you’d like. I can’t wait to see what Embark thinks of next for The Finals!
